Throughout his first two years as governor, Republican Rick Snyder opposed consideration of any Right to Work measure in the Michigan Legislature. Just yesterday, he indicated he no longer objected to a debate on such legislation. And today he heeded the persistent pleas of freedom-loving Michigan citizens by asking the Legislature to pass a Right to Work law and pledging to sign one if it reached his desk.
At a joint press conference with Mr. Snyder, leaders of the Michigan Senate and House announced this morning they have the votes to pass the 24th state Right to Work law before Christmas. But Big Labor is sure to mount a ferocious campaign to intimidate elected officials and maintain the forced-unionism status quo. To paraphrase Margo Channing (Bette Davis) in All About Eve, “Fasten your seatbelts, Michiganians; it’s going to be a bumpy two weeks.”
Snyder has long said right-to-work hasn’t been on his agenda but he’s changed his view because of Indiana’s February passage of a right-to-work law and increased political pressure to pass the bill in the Legislature’s lame duck session.
“This is not an issue between business and labor,” he said. “This is about an issue between hardworking Michigan workers and their unions,” Snyder said.
