Subcommittee to Discuss Legislative Proposals to Strengthen NLRA
WASHINGTON, D.C. | July 24, 2012 –
On Wednesday, July 25 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, chaired by Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN), will hold a hearing entitled “Examining Proposals to Strengthen the National Labor Relations Act.” The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
The House of Representatives has approved a number of proposals to strengthen the National Labor Relations Act, including legislation that preserves long-standing union election procedures and prohibits the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) from deciding the location of American businesses. Additional efforts are necessary to ensure federal labor law is fair and responsive to the needs of today’s workforce.
Over the years, the NLRB has issued a number of decisions that negatively affect workers. For example, in 2011 the board restricted access to a secret ballot election. The board has also taken steps to expand its authority over Native Americans and make it more difficult for employees to receive higher wages. In response, committee members have introduced proposals such as the Secret Ballot Protection Act, the RAISE Act, and the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act that would advance employee protections and defend tribal sovereignty.
Wednesday’s hearing will provide committee members an opportunity to examine board decisions affecting secret ballot elections, worker compensation, and tribal sovereignty, as well as discuss legislative proposals intended to protect workers and Native Americans.
