But Rank-and-File Republicans Overwhelmingly Back Right to Work

Last November, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won a second term in the White House, capturing 31 of the 50 states, because he carried the blue-collar household vote nationwide by a whopping 56% to 43% margin. Blue-collar voters (that is, the 57% of the 2024 American presidential electorate without a bachelor’s degree or more in formal education) certainly didn’t vote for Mr. Trump because union bosses told them to.

The fact is, Big Labor bosses of all kinds overwhelmingly backed Mr. Trump’s opponent, pro-forced unionism Democrat Kamala Harris. Reported union-boss contributions to Harris-Walz and the campaign’s allied groups totaled $54.5 million, or 260 times as much as union bigwigs donated to Trump-Vance and pro-Trump-Vance organizations.

Josh Hawley Aims to ‘Reward’ Workers by Advancing an Agenda Workers Don’t Back

“Donald Trump won his remarkable bid to return to the White House last year by appealing to the sense of fairness and economic aspirations of millions of Americans, not by pandering to power-hungry and cynical union bosses,” commented National Right to Work Committee President Mark Mix.

“Unfortunately, a faction of GOP politicians who are completely unrepresentative of their party, but have ample media access, are now pretending they want to ‘reward’ the tens of millions of workers who voted for Donald Trump in 2024 by advancing an agenda those workers don’t even back!

“The ringleader of this faction is Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, who until a few years ago actually claimed to his constituents to be a Right to Work supporter.

“Today Mr. Hawley openly favors the termination of employees who refuse to bankroll a union to which they don’t belong. And on March 4, Mr. Hawley introduced in Congress S.844, a radical, arguably unconstitutional measure that would empower bureaucrats to impose a forced-dues regime and other unwanted Big Labor schemes on employees and employers without even granting the employees a chance to vote on the so-called ‘contract.’

“The true, anti-employee nature of S.844 can easily be discerned from the fact that three of this power grab’s four original cosponsors are rabidly anti-Right to Work, anti-Donald Trump Democrat Sens. Cory Booker [N.J.], Gary Peters [Mich.], and Jeff Merkley [Ore.].

“The sole GOP cosponsor as this Newsletter edition went to press in early April was Ohio freshman Bernie Moreno, who is evidently aspiring to be another Josh Hawley.”

Scheme Would Enrich Corrupt Agency Donald Trump Wants to Shut Down

“Mr. Hawley likes to pretend that, in doing the bidding of union kingpins like Teamster czar Sean O’Brien, he is actually helping ensure the success of Donald Trump’s second presidential term,” continued Mr. Mix.

“This couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is that, if S.844 becomes law, it will actually hand vast additional money and power to the notoriously corrupt Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS).

“But on March 14, just 10 days after Mr. Hawley introduced his anti-worker bill, President Trump issued an executive order to shut down the FMCS along with several other counterproductive agencies.

“Josh Hawley and his cohorts are effectively taking the side of the virulently pro-forced unionism FMCS bureaucrats who are now battling with the Trump White House in a desperate bid to keep their agency open.”

Mr. Mix added that the Committee’s legislative staff will be working closely with allies on Capitol Hill to expose the dangers of S.844.

“Republican elected officials especially have no business supporting pro-compulsory unionism legislation like S.844,” he noted.

“Just last year, a nationwide scientific opinion survey, commissioned by the Committee and conducted by RMG Research, a firm founded by legendary pollster Scott Rasmussen, showed that Republican registered voters support the Right to Work principle by a mindboggling 86% to 8% margin.

“The same survey showed 80% of all working-class voters and 79% of actively employed union members agree that workers ‘should never be forced to join a union or pay dues to a union as a condition of employment.’”
